Who Else Wants Cornrows Instructions for Beginners?

Cornrow braided hairstyle

If you have been sticking to three strand braids out of fear, these cornrows instructions will help you gain the confidence you need.

Once you are familiar with french braids, you will do cornrows easily. If you think about it, cornrows are just french braids...upside down. In fact, cornrows have another commonly used name: dutch braids. Probably an inside joke between the Dutch and French cultures!

Those used to shorter hair styles may not be used to either french or dutch braids but that's no matter: here are some cornrows instructions to get you started...

  1. Work with clean, damp hair
  2. Map out your braid design either on paper or directly on the scalp
  3. Section the hair to set the foundation for the cornrows
  4. Contain sections with pins or other hair tools to get them out of the way and work each individually
  5. Start a three strand braid, crossing the strands under each other instead of over
  6. Grab a small section of hair from the scalp
  7. Add the small section to the braid ensuring to stay close to the roots
  8. Maintain tension on the hair but do not pull too tight
  9. Continue in this manner until you can no longer braid onto the scalp
  10. Finish the braid with a snag free rubber elastic or other hair tool.

That is cornrowing in just 10 steps! Here are some extra tips to create cornrows that look great...

  • Reduce - better yet, eliminate - the use of hair products. Once the hair is damp, you simply need a light hair gel lotion, if anything at all
  • Learn how to map out braid designs in order to work with different styles, head shapes, etc
  • Mix cornrows with other braid styles
  • Oil your scalp lightly as required but regularly use a braid sheen (or mist of water and natural vegetable oil) on the actual braids
  • Remove and redo rows at the first sign of scalp tension
  • Blow out or roller set extra curly hair in order to make it easier to work with

With this cornrows instruction guide, you will be making cornrows that look great and stay firmly rooted!
