What is the secret? How do you do cornrows?

How do you do cornrows? It is an often asked question so off we went to ask a stylist. But not just any stylist: Yessenia Reyes is a licensed cosmetologist from New York, USA who specializes in extraordinary cornrowing techniques. After seeing her talent online, we just had to ask her a few questions...

Where is the art of hair design for cornrow heading in terms of trends?
Yessenia: I myself am trying to make it not a "trend" but a part of life. When people look at my work I want them to see art and not only braids. So far I think the change has begun!

What do you think about stylists who name their hair braiding design creations?
Yessenia: I think that's a great! When they do that they are bringing to life their art. And it's a lot easier to identify. I myself have named a few of my creations.

Would you call your designs "extreme" or "unique?"
Yessenia: I would call my designs "unique". Not only are they made to perfection but they are made with lots of passion and with the freedom of art.

Asian cornrows hair style On how she creates cornrows hair designs...

"I create most of the hairstyles right there on the spot. I rarely draw anything out before I do it."
Mens cornrows for men with personal style On client cornrow styles requests...

"At times, a customer will have an idea and I try my hardest to bring to life what they want."
Learning to cornrow braids starts with
easy, straight row patterns On her hair design training...

"I attended two different cosmetology schools. Neither one of them offered enough training to perfect the skill of braiding. It's usually a one day thing. They go through it very briefly and move on to the next lesson."

What is your advice to any one else wanting to improve their own hair design artistry as much as you have?
Yessenia: I would say to practice, practice, practice. When you have a passion for something it shows. Getting in touch with your creative side is important. Look at art. It's all around us. Maybe that can be used as inspiration. Art is not strict. It's free. Have fun with it!

I am a licensed cosmetologist. But I did not learn the cornrow technique in school. I taught myself when I was about fourteen years old. Once I got the hang of it I would practice on my family and friends.
